Introducing: Gishwati Mukura National Park

Gishwati-Mukura National Park is Rwanda's newest national park, established in 2015, and represents a remarkable success story in conservation and reforestation. Located in western Rwanda, it comprises two separate forest fragments: the larger Gishwati Forest and the smaller Mukura Forest. The park is part of a broader effort to restore a critical ecological corridor linking these forests to Nyungwe Forest National Park in the south, aiming to increase biodiversity and primate movement.

Gishwati-Mukura is home to a population of Eastern Chimpanzees. While they are still being habituated and sightings can be less predictable than in Nyungwe, it offers a more raw and authentic chimp tracking experience

You’ll easily spot the great blue and Ruwenzori turacos, and you’ll probably pick up some of the colorful sunbirds too. Also look out for the handsome francolin scurrying away in the forest undergrowth. The birding in Mukura Forest looks very promising, but there are currently no trails yet. The birding in Gishwati-Mukura National Park is good throughout the year. The best time is from January to June when birds are most vocal.
